Lowcountry Local First is looking for applicants for our spring season apprenticeship program!

What do LLF apprentices do?
·         Apprentices are matched to a local mentor farmer and work through the season to learn the basics of production; this can include small livestock, greenhouse propagation, and in-season cultivation and harvest.
·         Work alongside other apprentices at DirtWorks, the Lowcountry Local First incubator farm on Johns Island.
·         Hands-on experience in the dirt as well as an introduction to the business side of agriculture
When do apprentices work?
·         The spring season runs from March 18 to August 2, 2013.
·         Apprentices can be full- (20+ hours) or part-time (4-8 hours).

Who can be an apprentice?

·         Apprentices require no prior experience in agriculture - just enthusiasm and a strong work ethic.
·         Apprentices will need their own transportation to and from their mentor farm.

What is the benefit of apprenticing through LLF?
·         In addition to physical work, LLF supplements apprentice education with field trips, farm tours, and access to agriculture networking opportunities in the Lowcountry.
·         Full-time apprentices are paid according to funding availability.
·         LLF works with business development, and apprentices have access to our network of local businesses (including restaurants and food entrepreneurs) and business development resources.
·         Our program is designed to train new farmers from start to finish; to do this, apprentices complete a season, from which point graduates are prepared to manage other farms or begin their own ventures through our incubator farm.
