Greetings from the Terrible High Desert!

We have a unique opportunity to work on 3 farms located within 5 miles of each other near Abiquiu New Mexico in the Lower Chama River Valley.  We live and farm in a strange and fascinating cultural and historical area.  Drive across the highway to an unexcavated Tewa pueblo abandoned in the 1500's, swim in the lake under the shadows of multi colored cliffs, and learn how to irrigate from a 278 year old Acequia.

 

Interns will participate with and learn from multiple farmers from diverse educational backgrounds using different approaches and methods of growing.  The thread that we share is our respect for the land and desire to pursue ecological agricultural systems capable of producing living wage profits.  Though the scope of our production varies all three farms are operated by young farmers and their families who cultivate approximately two to four acres of vegetables.

We are seeking a dependable, hard working, communicative, and able bodied person who is intellectually and physically curious to learn about small scale agriculture.  This would be an instructive opportunity for someone looking to someday start their own farming operation.

Interns will receive a 50.00 per week cash stipend in addition to available vegetables, beans, milk and cheese.  There is a nice studio apartment with a kitchen and bath.  Because of the size of the apartment and the relatively isolated location couples, friends, or friendly strangers are especially welcome.  We are ideally looking for two people to work from April until October, but can accommodate shorter stays as well.

Educational opportunities include market gardening, CSA operations, orchard management, goat husbandry, cheese making, hay bailing, irrigation techniques, seed saving, greenhouse construction, marketing, chicken keeping, soil health, and season extension.
