It is August. It is hot. At
Smithereen Farm, our Greenhorns headquarters is full of peaches, yellow squashes+ rosy-cheeked visitors.
Yes, we got hit by the blight, but as I type the air is full of vinegar vapors from the green tomato pickle. This is a long email. If you are a young farmer, and do nothing else, please take the survey at the bottom of the page, ok?
>news. Thrilling! We've officially won the USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Grant in which we are partnered with Cornell Extention- this means we'll be able to take the Greenhorns film and parade of educational/ celebrational programming to schools across the Northeast, and we can comission + distribute new graphic posters for classrooms! Yes, thats Farmbill money!

>events. As you know, The Greenhorns is a non-profit organization working to support, promote and recruit young farmers. We've found that one of our best skills is hosting events. Mixers. Seed swaps. Grilled meat+ beer.
"watermelon moonshine"- a campout, farmover, work party! w/ rude mechanical orchestra performance saturday night. Sunday: farm breakfast, workshops on seed saving, spinning, marketing, beekeeping, salvemaking, bike badge making, ricotta cheese making and farm workday. sliding scale.

Below this text is an "in email survey" that collects information for Greenhorns, Farmlasts and the Center for Rural Studies. Right now, we're trying to get better data about land-access.

radio show is now 2pm EST every Thursday live on air. Always available on the archive. We're really excited because the foryoungfarmers wiki is migrating over to our partners at Growfood.net- its still in beta, a social networking/ apprenticeship-finder website, very glossy and 2.0-- and a fine new home for our wiki. More about that later.
>personel. We've got enough! applicants for residential intern. All we really need is a dedicated, occasional techy. And a few more graphic designers for occasional projects.
