Porkville Ranch is a 2,000 acre property located in Yorkville, California. Porkville is home to the only breeding population of the Italian Cinta Senese pig outside of Italy. The mixed woodlands and oak savannah habitats found at Porkville are similar in climate and natural productivity to the Tuscan forests that have supported Cinta since the Middle Ages. Our pure bred pigs are raised humanely in an extensive forest and pasture system, and marketed as specialty whole-carcass forage fattened heritage pork, to Bay Area restaurants, trend-setting chefs and specialty butchers. The business is in early stage start up, and we are looking for an experienced outdoor swine stockperson to join this dynamic project.
The Swine Program Manager is responsible for the daily operational activities of the extensive swine program at Porkville Ranch. This position will help plan, coordinate and participate in all aspects of swine production, including:
Swine husbandry;
Breeding program supervision;
Manure management and composting;
Transport to slaughter facility;
Maintenance of pig fencing and containment systems;
Management and maintenance of feeding and watering systems;
Maintenance of swine housing and equipment;
Management of production records;
Maintenance of strict bio-security measures;
This position will be responsible for:
- Daily care, accountability, protection and well being of all animals in the swine program, as well as other species within Porkville’s multi-species farming system
- Upkeep of the permanent and mobile facilities associated with swine production and animal husbandry
- Supervising seasonal and/or full time staff
Recommended skills/experience include:
- Three years swine management experience, preferably in an extensive outdoor / pasture- based system
- Demonstrated success applying ecological farming principles and practices, such as intensive rotational grazing, organic animal husbandry, nutrient cycling of grazing animals, soil ecology, and accompanying record keeping
- High school diploma/GED required, Bachelors Degree strongly recommended (relevant major encouraged)
- Farm machinery and implement operation
- Mechanical repair and maintenance
- Foreign language skills encouraged (Spanish, Italian, German)
