The intern will gain experience working in a fast-paced nonprofit on event planning, community outreach, data collection, and project management. The ASA is a community-supported nonprofit organization that works with land owners in Rensellaer and Washington Counties in New York's upper Hudson Valley to conserve farmland.

ASA is pleased to offer one paid summer internship opportunity to provide outreach programming assistance. The intern will be supervised by ASA’s Communications Outreach Manager and spend the majority of his or her time working at ASA’s office located in Greenwich, New York as well as attending programs in Washington and Rensselaer counties and field checking farm data in Washington County.
The community outreach intern position is designed for an undergraduate student to provide hands-on experience in outreach and event programming as well as research and office assistance in a fast-paced nonprofit environment. The position is ideal for a student interested in agricultural and natural resources education, communications, event planning and land trusts. The community outreach intern will primarily work on the following: 1) compiling a contact list and field checking data of all commercial farms in Washington County; 2) providing assistance with community outreach programs including handling logistics, assisting with press and social media, and assisting at events; and 3) assisting other staff on projects, field work and office work, as time permits.
Examples of Possible Intern Tasks:
• Contact ag-related agencies, organizations and clubs for any public list of farms/farmers in the county
• Drive throughout Washington County to field check list of active commercial farms
• Assist with organizing gleaning programs for ASA at local farms. Attend gleanings, work with food pantries and oversee volunteers
• Assist with preparations for a “Come Farm with Us” bus tour
• Help post on ASA’s social media, including “Photo of the Day”
• Assist with a nature walk at a conserved farm including scheduling, press and attendance
• Accompany field staff on site visits to farm to monitor for compliance
• Assist with preparation and solicitation of auction items for ASA’s “Forever Farmland Supper” event
Requirements:
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transport. Willingness to travel with mileage reimbursement included;
• Understanding of, and enthusiastic interest in, the mission of ASA;
• Demonstrated strong organizational skills;
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite;
• Experience with project manager, programming and/or event planning; and
• Knowledge of farming and local farms a plus
Employment Terms:
• Ability to work 4-5 days a week for 36 hours per week for 10 weeks or 4-5 days a week for 30 hours per week for 12 weeks, with an approved set schedule; and
• Ability to work between early June and mid August.
