Urban Agriculture Coalition Launches Brooklyn Pop-Up Farm Dinner September 17

Green Guerillas, High School for Public Service and BK Farmyards are proud to announce the launch of a one-night-only Pop-Up Farm Dinner on Saturday, September 17 (with a rain date on Saturday, September 24). Teaming with several local restaurants including Brucie, 61 Local, The General Greene, Juventino, Four and Twenty Blackbirds and Scratchbread the dinner is to be hosted on the grounds of the Youth Farm at 600 Kingston Avenue. In addition to some of the tastiest and most innovative food of the year, intimate tours of the farm will be given while guests sip farm drinks and enjoy live music from local Brooklyn residents.
The 4 course, family-style dinner features the produce and flowers grown on site prepared by local chefs. General admission is only $40; Green Grower level donors of $75 or more leave with a basket of freshly picked produce. All guests receive special gift bags featuring fair-trade and local-centric products. Proceeds from the event will help cover repairs from recent Hurricane Irene as well as continue to expand health and community programming at the farm.
About Us:
The youth farm services over 250 students each school year, and continues their art, health and science programming in the summer through an innovative youth apprenticeship program. Students learn to lead farm workshops, understand their own food system and give cooking demonstrations, with special focus given to communication and interpersonal skills vital to career development. 'During my time working on the farm, I’ve learned to be more outspoken. I think the farm is doing good things for the community, ' says Tyasia a 15-year old summer intern. Another youth intern, Kema, adds, 'I never knew that I would have a lot of fun learning about farming. I look at food different now.' Leave it Better recently featured the youth in a video online.
The mission of the High School for Public Service: Heroes of Tomorrow is to enable each student to develop the academic and social skills necessary to be an active participant in the community and society. Each graduating student must complete at least 200 hours of community service, with many students finishing many more.
Green Guerillas uses a unique mix of education, organizing, and advocacy to help people cultivate community gardens, sustain grassroots groups and coalitions, engage youth, paint colorful murals and address issues critical to the future of their gardens.
BK Farmyards is an innovative network of Brooklyn farmers growing affordable, nutritious food in the cracks of the urban landscape. BK Farmyards seeks to engage and empower local communities through programs ranging from youth-led markets to adult apprenticeship programs.
