Give one year. Create real change.
The University of Montana Farm to College Program is now accepting applications for a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA to increase the amount of locally and sustainably-grown food on campus.
The University of Montana Farm to College Program (UM FTC) is dedicated to a Montana-based food system. The Program strengthens communities through local economic growth, preserves the community’s natural and cultural heritage, and positively impacts the environment. Since the inception of the UM Farm to College Program in 2003, the University of Montana has redirected over $3 million dollars into the local and regional economy and has grown to include sixty local vendors. In 2008, 15% of University Dining Services' (UDS) total food purchases were local.
The UM Farm to College Program is about investing in the health of our communities and the future of our food system. The VISTA will play an active role in strengthening the UM Farm to College Program, serving as a liaison between food producers, Dining Service Staff, and the community. By working with farmers, ranchers, community organizers, students, and food service staff, the VISTA will help identify new local vendors, and inquire about specifications, delivery methods and packaging to increase the amount of local and sustainable food on campus. The VISTA also has the responsibility of campus and community education and outreach. Facilitating discussion groups about sustainable food systems, giving informal presentations, and identifying and maintaining educational resources for UDS staff and vendors will help to build a well-rounded understanding of where our food comes from.
