NOFA-NY is pleased to announce the availability of seventy-five full scholarships to beginning farmers who are interested in attending the 2011 NOFA-NY Winter Conference: Diggin’ Diversity! The conference will be held at the Saratoga Hilton & City Center in Saratoga Springs, NY from January 21st-23rd, 2011. The conference features a full track of workshops for beginning farmers, including a full-day intensive workshop on Friday, January 21st.
Beginning Farmer Scholarships are awarded to beginning farmers who require financial assistance to pay for registration costs associated with the Winter Conference. These scholarships cover the full cost of registration ($225 for NOFA-NY members, $300 for non-members), which includes breakfasts and lunches on all three days.
To qualify for the Beginning Farmer Scholarship, applicants must fit the USDA definition of Beginning Farmer: an individual who “has not operated a farm or ranch, or who has operated a farm or ranch for not more than 10 consecutive years.” Applicants must also demonstrate financial need. If awarded a Beginning Farmer Scholarship, applicants agree to contribute 2 hours of volunteer service at the Winter Conference as well as complete a post-conference evaluation.
