Our farm of 60+ acres mixed use lands was build in the 1830′s – 1840′s. It consists of a main house, a large 4 story post and beam barn, a maple house, and several other out buildings. We work the sugar bush, 4 acres of market crops, a large greenhouse, several acres of pasture which are home to our sheep and cattle, and maintain a trout river and stream, a pond, wetlands and woodlands in a natural way that are crisscrossed with several walking trails. We are a market farm with our hands in many cookie jars.
We grow and sell a variety of items at area farmers markets, on farm, and through an internet farmers market. These items include fruits and vegetables (the mainstay of our business), eggs, fleece, beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, maple syrup, honey, beeswax products, breads, cookies, and jams. While most of our time is spent out in the fields growing and harvesting, we do harvest fruits on other local farms to sell at market; spend time caring for the animals; cook syrup; prepare and bottle honey; wash and candle eggs; wash and prep vegetables for sale; as well as prepare jams and baked goods for sale.All unsold food is also processed for winter sales and storage, We will provide hands on experience seeding, composting, using organic pest and weed removal practices, animal husbandry, bee keeping, forest husbandry, sugar bush maintenance, harvesting and preparing crops for sale, direct marketing, river and water management, food preservation, As well as many things that are not thought of as farm activities, but we have found that on a farm, a lot more goes on besides just planting, weeding, and harvesting. Farming is all encompassing and always seems to include small machine repair, tractor repair, construction, animal husbandry, wildlife management, and “countryscaping”.
We are located about an hour from Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Binghamton, Oneonta, and Cooperstown. We are a few hours away from the Catskills, and Pennsylvania. Our own town of Norwich (and other local towns) host many summer festivals and events; Blues festival, colorscape, Gus Macker, Summer evening concert series, motorcycle nights, classic car nights, Oxtar (archery festival), 4th of July fireworks, lots of parades, county fairs, as well as many other attractions such as the classic car museum ( Norwich), farmers museum (Cooperstown), Rogers Nature center (Sherburne), plus art galleries, wineries, and breweries. We are also near Colgate collage, Morrisville college, a handful of SUNY collages. Catch and release fishing in the river and pond (although you don’t have to release the catfish, those you can keep and eat), swimming in the river or pond, as well as the community pool in town. Plenty of land to hike and walk around on. Allergy note: we do keep bees on this farm, (and cats in the barn).
We are looking for an intern / volunteer (single, couple, small group of friends...) to stay at least a month with us between May 20th and October 20th of this year. A finished room in the barn will be provided for your lodging with bathroom and laundry facilities in the main house as well as all of your meals. By the end of your stay with us you should be able to leave with enough information to see if organic farming is for you, how to be sustainable on your own property, and how to run a market farm and a farmers market booth.
