barn razing
Posted: December 16 2009
these are our friends in Georgia - a really amazing farm family.
Riverview Farms, a strong and constant leader in Georgia's good food community, was severely damaged by a tornado last week. Watch this Fox news story to learn more.
They need our help. This Saturday, Dec. 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers are asked to deconstruct structures that were destroyed by the recent tornado.
The work is serious and potentially dangerous.
Be prepared for a disaster area littered with nails and splintered wood. Wear thick gloves, warm clothes, and work boots.
Tools would be appreciated as well, including a hammer drill (impact drill) with bits, hammers, crow bars, chain saw, metal saw, come-a-long tool, socket set, extension cords, and other general tools for dismantling.
Please RSVP here so we can get a headcount of how many folks are showing up. When RSVPing, please indicate in the "Comment" section which tools you can bring.
Lunch has been generously donated, but if you have dietary restrictions please bring your own food. Work will continue rain or shine (unless it's pouring). All volunteers must fill out this liability form, print it, and bring it with them.
The farm is located at 954 White Graves Road, Ranger, GA 30014.
There will be a farm benefit and barn raising party in the spring when the weather is more enjoyable.
Here's a note from the family:
Early in the morning on December 9, a tornado paid a visit to the farm. Yes, that would be the proverbial freight train sound that woke us up in the middle of the night. All people, animals, and houses were spared, but the winds demolished four barns and twisted our grain elevator, a crucial piece of our infrastructure, off of its foundation.
We're rapidly rebuilding.
Many have offered to help, and we appreciate your concern. We'll be holding a workparty to clean up debris over the December 19 weekend. If you'd like to hear more about that, you can email us at [email protected]. You can also make contributions to help our and other farms' rebuilding efforts through Slow Food Atlanta, who has transformed their flood fund into the Small Farm Disaster Fund. Contributions can be made online, and by mail to:

We're blessed to have such friends and supporters in the community. Thank you for all of your support, from the entire Swancy Family!
