apprenticeship at farm girl natural foods
We're a grass-fed livestock farm in Central Arkansas run by our young family of four. We use humane, sustainable farming practices to produce artisan animal products for a niche market of quality-conscious customers. We are deep in the process of developing and expanding from a moderately profitable side-business to a full time enterprise.
The day to day work is somewhat varied but almost certainly unglamorous. There is milking and milk processing and rotating all of our groups of animals though their pastures. This includes both meat and layer chickens, dairy and beef cattle, the draft team, and both breeding and feeder hogs. There is much hauling of feed, building of fences (both temporary and permanent), and persistent attention to detail. We also process all of our own poultry on farm and expect an apprentice to help with this task.
We are looking for a hard worker who doesn't mind getting dirty and looks forward to learning through experience, as we do every day. We expect an intern to help in every aspect of the farm including all chores, processing poultry, any projects, and occasionally deliveries and farmer's markets. This person should also be physically fit, have a valid driver's license, and be comfortable working around small children. In exchange for 35 hours a week and a commitment from early March through late October, we are happy to offer modest and private housing, a portion of all we produce on the farm as well as veggies from an organic vegetable farmer-friend, and a weekly stipend. For the particularly industrious person, there may be some hourly work available and/or commission sales at additional farmer's markets.
Applicants should email [email protected] with a little about themselves and a summary of their experience.
