newton farm intern
Part time internship on Newton Farm., a small organic vegetable farm set in a high Catskill mountain valley.
Our farm is moving into its second season of market production, delivering Asian greens and heirloom tomatoes, roots and squashes(and 40 other things) to half a dozen restaurants in Williamsburg and the Lower East Side. Next season we will be focusing on bringing "nutrient dense" biological farming practices onto our farm, through careful testing and soil amending. (See real food campaign.org) This will give you a great opportunity to learn alongside us. Among the core team at Newton Farm there are experienced farmers, marketers, and, a restaurateur, all of whom are willing to share their experiences, skills, and knowledge. The farm houses a rustic recording studio in one of the barns and music plays a big part in the aesthetic of the farm. The managing farm partners are based in Brooklyn, West Kill and Phoenicia, New York.
We are seeking a mature, self directed individual who works well independently and as part of a team. There is housing in a beautiful 20 room farm house. This could be a good opportunity for a NYC based person who wants to spend 4 or so days a week working hard and learning agricultural/food and marketing skills in a beautiful pastoral catskill setting.
Newton Farm has also provided educational experiences for NYC youth and will continue to incorporate this into its mission. We are a flexible and community oriented group that is continually seeking paths for linking our resources at Newton Farm with the NYC urban farm movement.
Your responsibilities will include everything that goes into helping run a successful sustainable business - from sowing, watering, fertilizing, picking, packing, and deliveries, to, inevitably, weeding.
Your own transport is necessary, we are somewhat flexible on days, the main focus will be weekdays. Pay will be commensurate with experience.
