Grounds Maintenance Specialist.
Primary Responsibilities: This position is typically responsible for performing a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following; manual weed removal, pruning, mowing, trimming, planting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, landscape lighting, pool, waterscape and drainage maintenance and occasional seed collection and installation of mortarless loose rock paths and small wall units.
The Grounds Maintenance Specialist is also responsible for many different projects related to planning, planting and caring for grounds, orchards and gardens including;

  • Maintain plantings, including collecting seeds and cuttings for nursery propagation or seed storage,
  • Trims and prunes trees, hedges and shrubbery,
  • Maintain and rotate potted feature plants as needed,
  • Plant and maintain the kitchen herb and vegetable garden, spice and fruit trees associated with lodge and other visitor facilities,
  • Maintain low-pressure irrigation systems for turf, landscaping spice and fruit trees,

Record waterscape maintenance and planting activities,
Perform approved integrated pest management (trapping, baiting and monitoring) as needed,
Monitor and report on the health of plants and trees,
Maintain/clean pools, ponds and fountains including monitoring, measuring and mixing chemicals and removing algae and maintaining fish health in water features.
Under the direction of the Native Program Manager, the Grounds Maintenance Specialist will;

  • Maintain native plantings, including collecting seeds and cuttings for nursery propagation or seed storage,
  • Trims and prunes trees, hedges and shrubbery,
  • Maintain and rotate mounted orchids and potted feature plants as needed,
  • Plant and maintain Hawaiian food forest

The Grounds Maintenance Specialist will be required to be familiar with the safe use of landscaping machines and tools, repair, and maintenance, such as: various sized tillers, string trimmers, mowers, chain/limb saws, tree climber, hedge trimmers, turf aerator, pressure washer, brush chippers, soil auger and UTV
Experience Required
Previous experience (2 years minimum) planting and maintaining sub-tropical and Hawaiian native landscapes
Certificate in landscaping/irrigation from Landscape Industry Council of Hawaii
Chainsaw safety course ideally a Subtropical Urban Tree Care Certificate from University of Hawaii or any other (basic, feller, climber) ISA certified arborist trainin
Hawaii Pesticide Applicators License (while we are an organic operation this training provides important information on materials handling and equipment use and maintenance)
Hawaii Hunters Safety Card
