Posted: October 20 2010

2010-2011 Winter/Spring Season Livestock Farmer wanted for diversified Eastern Catskills NY Farm

Old Field Farm is looking for a full-time livestock farmer to work and live on-site in Cornwallville, NY, beginning Spring 2011. The end date for the position is currently negotiable.
MISSION
Our farm explores the interaction and mutual benefit of art and agricultural practices. We subscribe to a diversified culture for both plants and animals. The farm’s overall mission is for the production to reflect the eastern Catskills landscape, with particular attention given to foods that best highlight the area’s terroir. The goal of the farm is not to maximize production of a given product but to establish an equilibrium between many varied species and to focus on the contribution they make to each other and thus to the overall productivity and health of the farm. Once sustainable balance is achieved the surplus is sold. This means that there are many products but in very limited quantities. We feel that this insures the highest quality of products and the best practice of farming.
POSITION
The ideal person will have at least one full year of animal husbandry experience, along with a strong interest and ability to manage the entire livestock and greenhouse operation.
General Skills Required:
Literacy in pasture management and rotational grazing;
Experience working with heritage breeds;
Knowledge in breeding, kidding;
Farm equipment operation knowledge and familiarity;
Food processing skills a plus;
Strong organizational capacity (record-keeping, communication, etc.);
Interest or skill in other areas of animal husbandry will be incorporated in the larger enterprise;
Salary: TBD
An additional opportunity might be available for a person (in addition to the livestock farmer) interested in expanding their knowledge and hands-on experience in four- season vegetable production.
