Note from a young farmer

Posted: December 12 2008

Howdy fellow young farmers,farmy12
This upcoming season, my partner & I have the privilege of stewarding a small piece of land nestled in the Puget Sound. Island Meadow is a previously full-time organic farm nestled in the hills on Vashon Island, located just outside of town & a short ferry ride to Seattle. The owners of this magical place, Greg & Julie, are taking a hiatus from farming for a while & have granted us their blessing in growing for the 2009 season & longer if things go well.

farmy2The property is about 1.5 acres of cultivation, mostly for annual vegetable crops, with some perennials on the side: raspberries, rhubarb, apples, figs, hazelnuts, kiwis. We plan on raising chickens for eggs, & if
things are going well, dabbling in some ducks or a milking goat. We plan on experimenting with no-till, cover crops, seaweed-harvesting, compost, inter-planting, bicycle-delivered produce, and more. We are looking for a third person to join our farming collective, in some way we all see fit, whether that be fully financially invested, or as a part time apprentices. We have housing about 4 miles away from the
property, in a collective household that also has another acre of growing space where we plan to grow as well. farmy31
Caitlin & myself have farming experience both in the Pacific Northwest & down in the central coast of California, where we have apprenticed on successful family farms for several seasons. If you think you might be interested in joining our venture, or if you have some advice, or want to visit our farm, write us! We'd love to hear from you.
See ya in the fields,
Chandler & Caitlin
