land opportunity - monument, OR

Posted: January 31 2012

Landowner in Monument, Oregon is looking to connect with young farmer(s).

The property has a small-scale farm which is 28,000 square feet and deer-fenced. There is room to expand the farmland. Owner is remodeling an existing 2800 square foot commercial building to be an on-site certified food processing facility. The building will also be set-up as a bakery, cafe and retail outlet. The goal is to eventually produce enough food (raw and processed) to sell to two nearby public schools and the general public. Each K-12 school has approximately 50 students each.
The situation would require a share cropping arrangement between the
landowner and young farmers. At first, no wages could be paid. There is a possibility for eventual worker ownership for the right people. Monument is a very rural area, and is not for everyone. The young
farmers must be self-motivated.
There is no mortgage on the property. The property has extremely low fixed overhead and very cheap electricity to pump water from an on-site irrigation pond. The farmland has excellent deep soil.
The first year's focus would be growing for eating and food storage for personal consumption, plus some retail business.
