land opportunity, central VA

Posted: February 14 2012

in exchange for some livestock care.  This is a good start-up opportunity for a landless greenhorn.

Red Row Farm is a very small, organic farm to table operation in Esmont, VA (30 minutes south of Charlottesville).  We just opened another restaurant, so this year our focus is very much skewed to the table side of the equation.  That means we have 1.25 acres of farmable land sitting idle for the 2012 growing season, which strikes us as a waste.  We are looking for someone (or a team of someones) interested in running their own organic produce operation on our land.  The “rent” would be 1 hour of labor per day caring for our livestock (8 pigs, 5 sheep, 30 chickens, 6 rabbits, 3 ducks and a pair of geese).  This is not a farm manager or internship job, this is a chance to run your own business, meaning you keep all the profits from what you sell, but there is no hourly/weekly compensation.  That being said, the sweetest part of this deal is that you have an established customer base of three restaurants, so you can focus on growing produce and not selling/marketing it.  The ideal candidate will have some farming experience, a can-do attitude, a ton of enthusiasm and a sense of humor.  Please contact [email protected] for further details.
