glynwood livestock apprenticeship - ny

Posted: December 19 2011
Glynwood Farm is seeking a livestock apprentice for the 2012 season. Located in Cold Spring, NY, in the lower Hudson Valley, the farm sits on 225 acres in the middle of Fahnestock State Park. Glynwood is an agricultural non-profit organization whose mission  is to save farming by strengthening farm communities and regional food systems. The farm engages in a number of pursuits including raising a diversity of animals, a vegetable CSA, and composting.
The livestock apprenticeship is a full season engagement in animal husbandry. The farm raises meat goats, sheep, cattle, hogs, both layer and meat chickens, and turkeys. We strive to raise healthy and happy animals that support our diverse landscape. We rotationally graze our ruminants and poultry to fresh pasture every few days and allow our hogs ample space to root around in pasture and woods. Our meat goats are used to help control invasive species on the farm and graze many dense, brushy areas. The meats and eggs that we produce are marketed locally to individual customers as well as restaurants, a natural food store, and a catering company.
The livestock apprentice will help with day to day care of the animals as well as monitoring  breeding, birthing, and care for sick or injured animals. During the months of June through November we process chickens and turkeys on farm and the apprentice will be part of the processing crew.
The position includes a private room in a house on-site that is shared with three other apprentices (the other three apprentices are vegetable apprentices that primarily work with the CSA). A monthly stipend is offered as well as vegetables in season, eggs, and discounts on meat. The apprenticeship starts in the beginning of either February or March and goes to the end of November.  If possible we would like applicants to visit the farm and work with the crew. Housing is available for overnight stays.  Please send a cover letter and resume to Donald Arrant at [email protected].
