farming opportunity in northern california

Posted: January 6 2012

Brought to you by the good folks at Gaberville Farm:

We are seeking a farming couple, or individuals to come and help us on our certified organic farm. We are located in the redwood region of Northern California. Established for 10 years as a local CSA and market farm, we are expanding into pastured eggs and rotational grazing this year, and a larger, subsidized CSA program. Located on good bottomland, we practice dryland farming with many crops, with a few irrigated acres for greens. We also bring in about 20 acres of hay a year.

As a community food security project located inside a larger, regional park, we often have the opportunity to work with others on projects and events. We hold educational workshops and host school visits. We attend a weekly farmer's market, sell wholesale to local outlets, and donate produce to non-profit organizations.

The successful applicants will assume responsibility for management of the CSA, starting with greenhouse production in March, and committing to a full time presence on the farm through October. Housing is available,  and salary or stipend will be determined by the skills the applicant will bring. Sweat equity or entrepreneurial projects on the farm are possible.

Solid experience in organic farming is a must, with a proven work ethic. Must have some practical experience with tractors and irrigation systems. Some of our field work is done with our draft team. Experienced help with the horses would be very welcome.

Our season begins in March with sowing seed in the greenhouse and finishes in November. If you are interested in the position please send an introductory letter with references to us at [email protected]. We will answer all inquiries.
