farm job in the Hudson Valley

Posted: January 27 2011

Position offered:

We are looking for a talented, enthusiastic and resourceful market gardener to design and manage a new 3/4-acre organic market garden operation, including greenhouse and cold frames, on a beautiful Hudson Valley estate. This is a salaried position,  produce grown will be sold to a restaurant in the city.

We're looking for someone with at least three years experience in planning and running an intensive, Eliot Coleman-style vegetable operation. Because of the historic nature of the estate, it is important for the garden to be both productive, and attractive with flowers and thoughtful design.

This is a part-time position, with overnight accommodation available, and includes the back-up and support of other farmers on site. It would be preferable for you to have had experience growing in the northeast.

We have potting mix, trays, seed and tools already delivered for the 2011 season.  The land, knickerbocker loam, was tilled and planted to cover crop in the fall. A preliminary planting plan has been developed that can be modified. There remain some key irrigation decisions to be made, washing station and cooling infrastructures to be overseen, and a final planting plan has to get worked out with the chef who will be cooking with the produce. Other farmers on the property are managing organic poultry, pork, beef and lamb operations, a restored cider orchard,  soft fruit operation and other projects. So there is a lot going on.

This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to join an innovative, committed and properly-funded team in an exciting new project. The sooner we can get started working with you the better!

For the year, beginning March 1, the pay is $25,000.

Please send a short letter of interest with C.V/ record of growing experience to [email protected].
