connecticut farm tours for young farmers

Posted: November 21 2011

Another smart idea from the New Connecticut Farmers Alliance. The first farm tour is today!  More to come.

The New Connecticut Farmers Alliance announces the beginning of its winter series of monthly farm tours with a visit to Sweet Acre Farm in Mansfield on Monday November 21.  New farmers Charlotte Ross and Jonathan Janeway returned to their native state in order to begin their farm business, thus representing a growing number of emerging small farms in Connecticut.

Charlotte and Jonathan started Sweet Acre Farm in February 2011 on a 1-acre plot they found through CT FarmLink.  They will share aspects of their journey that lead them to Sweet Acre Farm and their experience with CT FarmLink that allowed them to find their current property which they lease.  Through their apprenticeship experience with Maine Organic Gardeners and Farmers Association (MOGFA) they gained the necessary skills needed for sustainable vegetable and animal production, then launched their own business.  These young farmers will share their farming practices, choices for marketing their products, and highlight the lessons they learned from their first season.
The event includes a farm tour at 3:00pm with plenty of time for lively discussion and questions, followed by a potluck and bonfire at 4:30pm.  Space is limited and RSVP is required. Reserve your spot by emailing [email protected] or call 860.318.6813.
This event provides an excellent opportunity for current farm apprentices in Connecticut and farmers just starting their own business to hear from two individuals who have made the transition from working on a farm to running a farm business.  The tour will be held at 77 Forest Road, Mansfield CT 06268.
The New CT Farmers Alliance aims to bring together emerging and established farmers from across Connecticut to identify and develop support systems and structures to nurture a successful and diverse agricultural landscape in our state.  For more information visit www.newctfarmers.com
