Volunteer with us for the Bay Friendly Gardening Tour 4/262640407927_e5a20685d0
Coming up next Sunday is Stop Waste's Annual Bay Friendly Garden Tour. This time around, City Slicker Farms' Secret Garden -at 5105 Genoa St.- will be a stop on the North Oakland leg of the tour, highlighting sustainable urban agriculture and food justice. We are expecting up to 1,000 visitors throughout the day and we could still use a few volunteers in the afternoon to show visitors around the garden, pointing out examples of Bay Friendly gardening techniques such as composting, use of cover crops, drip irrigation, and propagation of native plants, trees, bushes, ground cover and/or flowers. If you are available for a 2 hour shift (or longer!) between 12 and 5, let us know! This is a great opportunity for folks who have spent time in the Secret Garden, but it is also completely open to new volunteers. All volunteers receive free Bay Friendly Gardening T-shirts and name tags! To RSVP please respond to this e-mail by Monday and tell us:
-What times you are available
-Your first and last name
-Your mailing address, so Stop Waste can send you information about the tour
-Your t-shirt size.
Come on...you know you want that name tag.

We are Hiring - Community Market Farms Coordinator & Summer Interns
You should have already received the news that we are hiring a new Farm Coordinator. The Coordinator will be running the opening and operations of a new Community Market Farm with the City of Oakland Parks and Recreation. This will include community outreach, building coordination, farming, volunteer/staff management, farm-stand sales, event planning, technical assistance for community members, administrative work, and record-keeping. The project will consist of two phases, a building phase and an ongoing operations phase. This is a great position for motivated people who are interested in all aspects of community food security and food justice. For a complete job description please see our website. Cover letter and resume are due May 15th.
If you're just looking for a taste of what an urban farming career might be like, you might want to apply to be a summer intern. Interns are unpaid and work from 8-20 hours a week for 3-4 months on a variety on projects, including all kinds of urban farming tasks and behind the scenes office work. No experience with gardening is necessary, but a strong desire to learn and a commitment to food justice is a plus. For an application, please write [email protected].
Help us find a new truck!
In sadder news, our truck is not in good shape these days. The City Slicker Farms' Backyard Garden Program relies heavily on the use of a truck for hauling compost, wood and other materials. If you have any leads on an affordable pick-up truck in great shape with at least 2 yards capacity, PLEASE let us know
THANK YOU for being part of City Slicker Farms and our community.
