LOCAL FAMILY FARM NEEDS HELP RISING FROM THE ASHES
cayuga
Indiegogo campaign HERE
Family-owned Cayuga Pure Organics, an organic farm near Ithaca NY, has been producing beans and grains for area stores, restaurants and CSAs for the last 7 years. They suffered a devastating loss on May 30th when the structure that housed their cleaning and production facility, and a considerable amount of inventory, was burned to the ground in a fire accidentally started by a minor playing with matches.
Although CPO has some insurance coverage, like so many small scale farms, they do not have enough to cover the cost of rebuilding the facility plus purchasing new equipment. As a result, the family and small group of dedicated employees are reaching out to the community to help them rebuild. Unless they can obtain the funding to rebuild the farm will not survive.
CPO was founded in 2003 with the goal of becoming part of a local movement to promote sustainable food production. Specific goals are to produce food while promoting health, enjoyment and local availability; to contribute to distribution systems which create a bond between farmers and consumers and move food economically; to create an environment in which consumers are educated about where their food comes from and become vested participants in the system; to support the viability of the other farmers who use this same system to market their products and build their own relationships with consumers; and last but not least to accomplish all of these goals in a way which does not deplete or destroy the resources necessary to continue into future generations.
There are two local confirmed events benefitting CPO at this time.
On June 28th from 6:30-9:30PM, Cayuga Street Kitchen is hosting the 2nd DIY Adventure Film Festival and generously donating their proceeds. This will be at 610 N.Cayuga Street.  Greenstar is hosting an event July 13th from 5-9 PM in the Greenstar Space (700 W.Buffalo Street Ithaca NY). There will be more info to come as the date approaches.
Cayuga Pure Organics is also accepting donations at their fundraising site on IndieGoGo - the link is http://igg.me/at/cpo. Every dollar counts so please remember that every small amount adds up!
