ASSISTANT MANAGER
Beech Hill Farm
Salary: Dependent on experience
Reports to: BHF Manager
Supervises: Field crew workers, farm stand workers
Education: BA or comparable agricultural experience
Qualifications:
Exceptional organizational and personal communication skills. Passion for working collaboratively with college age students, college staff, faculty, and the wider Mount Desert Island community. Experience and interest in tractor operation and maintenance. Ideally, experience in small business management, and knowledge of growing organically for market. Minimum of 3–4 years farming experience. Familiarity with organic certification standards. Computer literacy, and basic math skills. Ability to oversee maintenance of infrastructure, and deal with contractors.
The primary responsibility of the Assistant Manager, working with and under the direction of the Farm Manager, is to maintain Beech Hill Farm as a sustainable organic farm producing food for local markets including our Farm Stand, COA Kitchen, Wholesale Clients, and a small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. The management team is responsible for developing and sustaining Beech Hill Farm as an educational resource for the College of the Atlantic and the greater Mount Desert Island community.
Essential Duties:
Marketing/Advertising, including oversight of CSA and wholesale accounts
Overseeing groups of students, field crew members, and volunteers in projects and daily farm work
Assisting in all aspects of crop production, including seeding, transplanting, fertilizing, cultivation, tractor work, harvesting, packing, irrigation, and crop planning
Providing oversight for the Farm Stand with an eye to productivity, customer satisfaction, etc.
Maintaining a positive working relationship with the COA business office
Inventorying, sourcing, and placing orders for necessary supplies related to produce marketing and office management
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 60+ lbs, work in all weather conditions, and handle long hours of physical work.
