it's like a csa - but with software
Great news everone! Farmier is now accepting signups for its farmOS Hosting Service. Sign up now and you can start a 30 day free trial. After 30 days, farmOS hosting will be $50 per year. This is a special price for the beta period, so sign up now!
What is "farmOS Hosting," you ask? You're probably familiar with "Community Supported Agriculture" - where a farmer offers subscriptions to their harvests, and customers receive a share each week. Farmier is like that - but for software. You could think of it as a "Community Supported App". You subscribe for a year of hosting, and Farmier handles all the set up and maintenance for you. Your subscription also supports development of the software, so it can continue to grow and improve.
farmOS is not like other apps that you install on your phone/tablet. It is essentially a website, which means you can access it from any device with an internet connection - without installing anything! Like other websites, farmOS needs to be "hosted" on a web server that is connected to the internet 24x7. This is what makes it accessible to you whenever, wherever. Running a web server requires some work (and know-how), and not everyone can take the time to figure it out themselves. That's what Farmier is for.
Farmier specializes in farmOS hosting, so we can take care of your farmOS site for you. You can just focus on record keeping.
Aside from hosting your farmOS site, Farmier also provides:
- Unlimited users
- Automatic upgrades
- Automatic backups
- SSL encryption
- File storage (coming soon!)
- more!
Mike Stena, the developer of the software considers this to be the "beta" phase of farmOS and Farmier. It's still a little rough around the edges, but it's getting better and better. I am working steadily on the project, and more people are starting to join!
farmOS is "open source" - which means all the code is available for free - and anyone can set it up and run it themselves, add features, and contribute back. Over time, my hope is that a community momentum will build, and the project will take on a life of its own - developed and managed by anyone who wants to join the effort.
Signing up for Farmier hosting is a vote for open source software. Together we can build something great!
